Difficulties as newbie...

Hi there, I'm a new visitor of this site, I'm interested in the Monero project and I wanted to start hobby mining today (yeah, I have nothing better to do on christmas).

The difficulties I ran in to: - getting a wallet to work on Mac OS X was impossible (I don't know how to compile things, I tried various guides online, but they all failed). - getting the wallet on my windows machine to work didn't go well either, because that's a 32 bit machine, and somehow Monero didn't run on it. Neither did any mining software for the crypto node things. - Linux was my next try, but that failed as well for various reasons (I needed to "dive in to command line hell" to get anything working, as usual on Linux, everything is possible, but you need hours and hours time to sort out even the most basic things.

The only thing that worked so far was the mymonero.com online wallet... :) And even then... I get the payment address, but not the view address. Seems odd.

Is Monero this closed-up to newcomers? This can't be the purpose right? I wan tot mine, participate and run a full node... I want to do something to help this project. But first I'll need to buy me a 64-bit windows machine? Or get some linux-dude in here to set things up?

Are there any guides that are up-to-date and work for me to follow? Or is there a way to get me mining/running a node wishing a reasonable time?

greetings, MM

Hi, I hope you have come back to try the 0.9 binaries, you should find it a LOT easier. If not please give it a shot, it should work straight away.

You can get some direct help by joining #monero on freenode IRC.

I can help you with windows (64 bit) or linux using lubuntu (64 bit). When I get back home in 2 days I can give you my full attention.

For mining, we need to know what CPU and GPU you have

Check these links out for now and see if they help

Thank you for the reply.

I don't have a 64-bit machine. I have a rather OK windows machine and some older laptops and a macbook pro at my disposal atm. Since this is a volunteer project, I would like to participate and running a full node, and if possible mine (CPU) or GPU (a radion 5500)

I tried again to connect even a full node, but it failed. Compiling is too difficult, I really cannot compile anything on a linux machine, the commands don't work and in general I can't spend the time to set this stuff up, to re-doing all that work whenever a new version is released. I like to install something, maybe tweak some settings and config, but that's about it. (Call me lazy wall you want maybe, but if years in the IT world has learned me, it's that Linux is only free when your time has no value).

So, is there a way to install monero full node on a win 32 machine? Is there maybe a way to install some kind of miner on that machine too?

About the links you submitted: The first one: I don't compile. But maybe if there's a full day free for me, then I'll try to get this linux stuff running on a spare machine, but I don't have high hopes :)

The second one: These are the general links, they are useful but not relevant for my questions

The last one: a very very 550+ pages thread, I can't find anything in there, it's a jungle.

sorry for your frustration - its common round these parts. 32 bit is troublesome. i think its whats been holding up 0.9 release. ive been working on a custom ubuntu that has everything good to go but thats 64 bit
